Jorge Zalszupin
Designer Biography
1922 â 2020
Jorge Zalszupin was born in Warsaw, Poland, and studied architecture in Bucharest before moving to Paris to work as an architect, and then to Brazil in the late 40s.
In 1959, Zalszupin started the furniture firm LâAtelier. Emphasizing a high level of craftsmanship, LâAtelier saw near-immediate success and eventually had two factories producing his designs.
Zalszupin was heavily inspired by Danish design and while he was known for his refined work in jacaranda and other Brazilian woods. LâAtelier thrived in Brazil, having ten shops at the height of Zalszupinâs career. His furniture also won numerous commissions, including in Brasilia.
Jorge Zalszupin is considered one of Brazilâs most important designers of the twentieth century.
